Cable Knit: Styling Sweater Vests

I’ve already talked about my love of the preppy style resurgence once on the blog, but today I’m focusing on a different preppy style trend: sweater vests! I made many trips to local thrift stores before finding one to add to my collection. I’ve found that they key to styling sweater vests is making sure they have v-neck neckline. I’m usually against v-necks, but they work so well with this style and adding a collared shirt underneath!

When styling your own sweater vest, you could also pair it with a pleated or flared skirt, but I chose to style mine with jeans since it was a crisp 38 degrees when doing this shoot. I also think the jeans make it so wearable and cute for day-to-day activities! To really play up the preppy vibe, I added a pearl choker and green marble hair clip.

Trend Forecast: Jewel Tones

One of my favorite trends for fall 2020 has to be jewel tones. I love the classic white, cream, brown, and black colors that traditionally accompany fall and winter fashion, but jewel tones are making a statement this year and I’m super excited to be able to mix things up. Right now, my favorite jewel tone is ruby red (this might be because I’m an OU student and it’s incredibly close to crimson.)

I knew I wanted to pair my ruby shirt with my pleated skirt because the plaid pattern also has red in it. A match made in heaven! Since the pleated skirt already has a preppy vibe, I decided to really lean into it and accessorize with a pearl headband and matching white booties.

This is one of my favorite outfits I’ve styled lately! I plan to share another post later in the season about how preppy fashion is making a comeback, so be on the lookout for that. I’m definitely a prepster at heart so all these trends are making my heart sing!

Blush and Bronze: Styling Silk Scarves

One of my favorite style obsessions from this summer has to be wearing silk scarves as tops. I ordered 2 from Amazon immediately and have been loving them ever since. But be warned- do too much physical activity in these babies and they have a tendency to slide right down your torso, no matter how tight you think you tied the knot. I’m speaking from personal experience here.

While there are several different ways you can tie a silk scarf as a top, my personal favorite is the one pictured. This style definitely favors the IBTC, so if you need a little more coverage, this might not be the style for you- a halter-style tie may be more feasible. All you need to do to achieve the style I’m currently sporting is fold your square scarf into a triangle diagonally, then bring it around with the widest angle pointing straight down your back. Tie the 2 ends into a knot and adjust, then you’re done!

Earning Your Stripes: Styling Menswear

Having worked several retail jobs in my life, I’ve learned a few things about clothing. One thing I’ve especially picked up on is the difference between men’s and women’s clothing. While womenswear often caters to more trendy styles, menswear tends to stick to the basics. In my experience, it also tends to be higher quality, softer, more durable- the list goes on.

So why is it so uncommon for women to venture into the men’s section when purchasing clothing? Androgyny is becoming more and more mainstream, but as a sales associate I still rarely saw women venture into the men’s section, and vice versa. In reality, being able to purchase clothing because you like it, not just because of the gendered section it’s sorted into, opens up a whole new world of possibilities for both men and women.

For this outfit, the menswear piece I chose to style was the button-down shirt. While I appreciate a good androgynous look, that’s not completely my style, so I wanted to make sure I was able to style this men’s piece in a way that was still feminine. I chose to style this look with a black lacy bralette, high-waisted mom denim shorts, and gold accessories to balance out the masculinity of the men’s shirt. I also chose to partially tuck in my shirt to add visual interest with a faux asymmetric hemline.

Shoutout to my old coworker Mikey for being the inspiration behind my half-tucked shirt! I loved this style last summer but totally forgot about it until I saw him rocking it one day at work. If you’re not following him on Instagram, you should be- he’s a thrift and vintage stylist and a total fashion icon!

Double Denim: An OOTD

I’ll be honest- when I first found out that combining denim washes was going to be a trend in 2020, I was hesitant. I wrote a blog post about easing yourself into it (using black denim and navy denim as my example) but was unsure if I would ever mix two shades of blue in my ensembles. Fast forward to July, and combining denim washes is now one of my favorite trends I’m seeing right now. Who would’ve thought? Not me!

I had been on the hunt for the perfect pair of two-tone denim jeans all summer and finally found them a few weeks ago. They’re different from anything else I have in my closet and I love how trendy (but simple) they are. When styling these, I like to try to keep my top pretty basic since I know that the jeans are the true star of the show. Paired with some trendy gold jewelry and a simple black headband, this outfit is good to go!

I’ve been sharing some fancier #OOTDs with you all lately, so I hope you enjoy this more casual look. This is a pretty good representation of what I wear on a day-to-day basis when I don’t have a ton of errands to run and I’m mainly working from home.

Watermelon Sugar: Styling Complimentary Colors

If you were a pre-teen in the late 2000s to early 2010s, you probably remember the iconic color combination that was hot pink and lime green. It was almost unescapable- I feel like everything from clothing to PB Teen home décor was covered in those complimentary colors during that time period. But just because colors are complimentary, that is, colors that opposite of each other on the color circle, doesn’t mean they automatically go together. If you decide to pair complimentary colors together (especially pink and green), you have to be strategic. Otherwise, you’ll unintentionally look like your 2009 middle school self.

To correctly style complimentary colors, you should pick one color to be your main color and one to be your accent color. (For this outfit, I chose green as my main and pink as my accent.) Add some neutrals (mine is white) so the two colors don’t seem completely overwhelming. And whenever possible, don’t pair a neon color with anything other than a neutral. Since I chose light green and light pink, the colors seem less harsh and look more cohesive together.

Shirt: 3/4 Sleeve Button Front Shirt – Liz Claiborne

With all that being said, feel free to be adventurous when pairing colors together! My recommendations are just that- recommendations- and are not the be-all and end-all of fashion color theory. Be creative, and have fun!

All Tied Up: An OOTD

It’s getting hot in Texas, so I’m always looking for easy-breezy outfits to choose on days I need to be out and about running errands. This is one of my new favs! The silky top is super lightweight and keeps me super cool, and the shorts are stretchy and comfortable. Paired with my wedge sandals that are meant to provide a comfortable walking experience, this outfit is perfect for the days that I’m on the go!

I always struggled with wearing tie-front shirts because I felt like my bra was always showing, but recently I saw a TikTok that showed how to tie the front around your bra to completely stop that from happening. A game-changer for sure!

Heart Eyes IRL

Bachelor in Paradise ended this week, and I’m honestly super heartbroken about it. What am I supposed to watch while I eat lunch now?

I’m excited for Peter’s season of The Bachelor, though. I like to have Bachelor Wednesdays with my friends (we watch on Hulu) and come up with wild theories about how the season will end. I have a weird obsession with this franchise now- if I’m still single by the time I’m 25, you can bet I’ll be applying to be a Bachelor contestant.

With BiP ending, I thought my crushin’ shirt was super fitting for my Tuesday #OOTD. I’ve loved watching this cast catch feels and find love this season!

SHOP THE LOOK:

How do you feel about Peter for Bachelor? A lot of #BachelorNation wanted Mike, who I think would’ve also been a great choice. LMK in the comments!

Born to be Wild

I love the quote that goes something like “I was born to be wild, but only until 9 p.m. or so.” I feel like that has perfectly described me lately- with the ramping up of basically everything in my life, I’m working to continue making sleep a priority. Being in bed by 10 every night helps me get up super early for my Tuesday/Thursdays, which is essential because I like to beat the crowds to campus and have some peace and quiet for my #OOTD shoots, all before my 9 a.m. class. It definitely sets me up for a busy day!

SHOP THE LOOK:

Scrunchie: Black Scrunchie – Walmart
Top: Women’s Fitted Short Sleeve Crew T-Shirt – Target

I’ve also found that adequate sleep also helps me manage my stress levels, something I’m already finding to be super important this year. How do you manage your stress levels?

Call Me, Beep Me!

Confession time: I never actually watched Kim Possible as a kid. But I definitely felt like I was channeling some KP vibes today with this #OOTD. Am I wrong?

My last class of the afternoon was cancelled, meaning I would be able to get home before the heat of the day hit. (Hello, jeans weather!) I’ve been looking for an excuse to break these out- they were one of my incredible H&M finds from about a month ago- and I’m glad the weather cooperated and allowed me to stay comfortable all morning. I’m loving the camo print, I definitely want to pick up some more camouflage pieces for fall!

SHOP THE LOOK:

Earrings: Smooth Metal C Hoop Earrings – Target
Top: Jersey Top – H&M
Belt: Loop Belt – Target
Pants: Super Skinny High Jeggings – H&M
Shoes: Ward Sneaker – Vans

The only con I can find of wearing crop tops to campus is that sometimes my classrooms are freezing cold. I’ve had to start bringing a sweatshirt to break out just in case my classes start to double as the arctic tundra!
